Here in Colorado, winter is right around the corner. With the colder temps comes snow and ice. Then sand, salt, and chemicals are thrown into the mix, which all dry out your pup’s feet. I’m going to show you how to make homemade paw balm to moisturize and protect your dog’s paw pads.

I know winter is hard on Laila’s feet because it’s hard on my skin. Walking on snow and ice is bad enough in shoes! Can you imagine doing it barefoot?

Laila will not wear protective shoes on her feet. I have tried and honestly, it’s pretty funny to watch. She becomes a dancing dog and we don’t even get outside before she starts tearing them off. But if your dog allows shoes, great!

This simple homemade paw balm will moisturize and soften rough, dry paw pads.

There are several oils you can use for paw balm. I like coconut because it melts nice and smells great. It also returns to solid form for less mess. The only issue is… dogs love coconut oil. So to prevent Laila from licking it all off after applying, I add lavender essential oil. So here is how to make homemade paw balm for your dog.

What You Will Need

  • Lip balm tubes or 1 oz tins with lids
  • Wide mouth mason jar
  • Wooden popsicle stick or skewer to stir

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp Shea Butter
  • 2 Tbsp Coconut Oil
  • 2 Tbsp Olive Oil
  • 2 Tbsp Beeswax
  • 20 Drops Lavender Essential Oil

How to Make Homemade Paw Balm

Place all ingredients into your clean Mason jar and microwave on high for 30 seconds. Stir with popsicle stick and if necessary, continue to heat in 15 second increments until you have a smooth mixture.

Carefully pour the mixture into tins or lip balm tubes. If using lip balm tubes a small funnel may be helpful. Wait for the mixture to harden completely and apply as needed.

Safe Essential Oils for Dogs

Other essential oils you can add are: chamomile, frankincense, and myrrh. Not all essential oils are safe for canine use so make sure you only use ones that are. Here is a list of safe oils for dogs.

  • Ginger
  • Bergamot
  • Myrrh
  • Lavender
  • Chamomile
  • Frankincense
  • Rosemary

Try out some different scents and consistencies and see what works best for you and your dog. Take care of those furry little feet!

Wag on my friends.
