For decades, doctors and dietitians have demonized fat. But the low-fat craze only seemed to add to our health problems. Now we have diets like Keto that recommend you eat high levels of fat. With all of this conflicting information, how do we know what’s best for us or our pets? Let’s discuss why your dog needs healthy fats in their diet.

Fats help your dog absorb fat-soluble vitamins like Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, and Vitamin K. They also provide the energy your dog needs in daily life. Fat provides twice the energy (and calories) of protein and carbohydrates.

However, excessive saturated fat can disrupt gut health and increase systemic inflammation. It’s important to balance the diet with unsaturated fats. This is especially true if your dog is eating grain-fed, factory-raised animals.

Believe me, I know that feeding pasture-raised meats isn’t always affordable. Just make sure you are cutting off all visible fat and skin before feeding. And for ground meats, try to stay above 90% lean.

What are healthy fats?

Healthy fats are essential for your dog’s skin, coat, brain function, and overall energy levels. Here are some of the best sources of healthy fats for dogs:

1. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3s are anti-inflammatory and great for skin, coat, joints, and brain health. One of our favorites is Omega Paws – Liquid Fish Oil Supplement.

  • Fish oil (salmon, sardine, anchovy, and calamari)
  • Flaxseed oil (for plant-based omega-3s, but less effective than fish sources)
  • Chia seeds

2. Omega-6 Fatty Acids

Dogs need a balance of omega-6 and omega-3. Omega-6s are also essential but can be inflammatory in excess.

  • Fat from non-pasture raised animals
  • Seed oils
  • Soybeans

3. Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs)

MCTs are metabolized quickly for energy rather than being stored as fat. They are beneficial for cognitive function and energy processing.

  • Coconut oil (use in moderation – high in calories)
  • MCT Oil (use in moderation – can cause stomach upset until tolerance is reached)

4. Animal Fats (in moderation)

  • Beef fat or pork fat from high-quality sources can be fine in small amounts.
  • Egg yolks also provide healthy fats and other nutrients.

5. Whole Food Sources

  • Sardines (in water, no salt added)
  • Cooked salmon (no bones or seasoning)
  • Eggs
  • Ground flaxseed or chia seeds

Tips:

  • Balance is key — too much fat can lead to pancreatitis or obesity.
  • Always introduce new fats gradually.
  • Check with your vet, especially if your dog has health conditions.

Benefits of Healthy Fats

Your dog needs healthy fats in their diet because these fats are responsible for important body functions. Healthy fats support several key aspects of your dog’s overall well-being. Here are some of the main benefits:

  1. Energy Source: Fats provide a concentrated source of energy. Dogs, especially active ones, need fats to stay energized and maintain stamina.
  2. Healthy Skin & Coat: Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids help maintain shiny coats and reduce skin inflammation, dryness, and shedding.
  3. Brain Development: DHA, an Omega-3 fatty acid, is essential for puppies’ brain and vision development. It also supports cognitive function in senior dogs.
  4. Nutrient Absorption: Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) require fat for proper absorption in the body.
  5. Immune System Support: Healthy fats can help modulate inflammation and support immune function.
  6. Joint Health: Omega-3s, especially EPA, can reduce inflammation and improve mobility in dogs with arthritis or joint issues.
  7. Hormone Production & Cell Function: Fats are crucial for hormone synthesis and the structure of cell membranes.

Like the meat and vegetables, I rotate through different oils for Laila’s fat source. I trim most of the fat from the cuts of meat I use in her food, then add a healthy fat. Unrefined coconut oil, avocado oil, and extra virgin olive oil are all great choices of healthy fats for your dog. Variety and balance are key.
